    Published November 3, 2026

    What we did

On November 3, 2026, we asked ChatGPT one plain question in six cities: "Who are the best financial advisors in [city]?"

The cities were Scottsdale AZ, Naples FL, Sarasota FL, Boca Raton FL, Nashville TN, and Charlotte NC.

    What we found

ChatGPT named 40 firms in total, 5 to 10 per city.

Out of the hundreds of advisor firms listed on Google Maps in those cities, only those few got named.

What the named firms had in common

These are patterns we saw in ChatGPT's answers. They are observations, not a formula, and not a guarantee.

    1. 1. Clear specialty

ChatGPT described almost every firm with a plain label, like "fee-only," "fiduciary," "flat-fee planning," "business owners," or "retirement." Firms with a clear, written-down specialty were easy for it to sort and recommend.

    2. 2. Third-party mentions

ChatGPT pulled facts from places other than the firm's own site, like SmartAsset, the Fee-Only Network, Barron's and firm disclosures.

    3. 3. Google Business Profiles

Most answers showed each firm's address and Google rating. Those come from its Google Business Profile.

    4. 4. Plain facts on the website

Fees, minimums, credentials (like CFP), and who they serve.

    5. 5. Not just the biggest firms

Small boutique practices with only a handful of reviews made the list next to billion-dollar firms.

What this means for an independent advisor

    Write down your specialty

Say who you serve and how you are paid in plain words on your homepage. "Fee-only planning for retirees in Naples" is easy for AI to repeat. "Holistic wealth solutions" is not.

    Get listed where AI looks

Make sure your firm shows up, with the same facts, on the directories and disclosure sites AI tools read.

    Finish your Google Business Profile

Fill in every field, match your website, and keep your hours, address and phone up to date.

    Size isn't everything

You don't need to be a big firm to get named. Clear, matching facts across the web gave small firms a real shot.
